Ekebergparken: The OTHER Oslo Sculpture Park

Ekebergparken_TheOtherOsloSculpturePark

While I may not have enjoyed Oslo, I wasn’t about to sulk my days away in my hostel (where my dorm mates had really weird habits. One would sleep all afternoon and then leave a 9pm and one would stay in bed watching TV on her iPad for hours and hours). One of the biggest attractions in Oslo is the Vigeland Sculpture Park, but to be honest, I wasn’t too keen on going. I don’t know if it was because all travel bloggers seem to visit it or because I had seen pictures and wasn’t really impressed. Either way, I wasn’t interested in going.

You too can find this angry little girl sculpture in the middle of Oslo. Or try to find the silver scuba diver at the harbor. Oslo is filled with art everywhere.

EkebergparkenBut then I found out that Oslo has another sculpture park (they’re really really into art in Oslo. Especially sculpture) and I decided to trek out there. It turned out to be one of my favorite parts of my Oslo trip.

The Ekebergparken Sculpture Park is something else. So quiet that you feel transported far from the city of Oslo, with art from dozens of different artists, it was surprising at every corner. You can even stand in the spot where Edvard Munch was supposedly inspired with the image of The Scream – and you’re encouraged to scream!

Though I feel like the view has changed a bit since Munch’s time.

If you’re headed to Oslo, I encourage you to spend a couple hours wandering through the Ekebergparken Park. I couldn’t see everything but here are some of my favorite Ekebergparken sculptures.

Everyone’s the same on the inside!

Where do Michelin tire babies come from?

The Ekebergparken is also an archeological site where you can see ancient stone circles and try to call up some mischievous spirits.

Oh, hey, I’m not alone in this park…

JUST KIDDING it’s a creepy giant woman statue!

Art is magic. Or death. I’m not sure which interpretation is correct here.

I found this note in one of Venus de Milo’s drawers! If anyone can translate it, please leave a comment!

I have to be honest here: when I read sculpture park, my mind jumped to slightly boring statues. My mind was not ready for the coolness of the statues you photographed! The woman/skeleton is awesome. The metal Michelin blob looks unreal. And the woman “walking” towards you actually scared me because I looked at the picture before reading the text underneath. I’ll definitely visit this place when I visit Oslo!

I’m not a super-artsy person but this park is free (and open 24 hours!) so I decided to give it a shot. I had a great time. The skeleton/angel was my favorite, closely followed by the optical illusion face. 🙂
