My Favorite New York Bars: The Way Station
The Way Station
I stumbled on The Way Station through a friend, and the nerd in me rejoiced. If you are a fan of steam punk, Doctor Who, or a local bar with a community feel and live music six days a week, you need to stop by The Way Station. Walking in almost feels like stepping into a local watering hole on a steam punk planet — unassuming from the outside, but with an atmosphere of warmth and family inside. You can drop by to imbibe one of their sci-fi themed cocktails, or to enjoy the live music Monday-Saturday or a movie on Sundays. Check out their schedule of music, movies, and other special events (including screenings of Doctor Who and Sherlock) here.
If you’re a Whovian, you can’t miss this place. The TARDIS door opens into the bathroom (it’s bigger on the inside) where Who stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillian, and writer Stephen Moffat have all graffitied the walls. You can enjoy trying to spot the Who themed paraphernalia in the decor — the fez behind the bar, the sonic screwdriver beer taps, the angel watching from the stage.
This New York bar is partially inspiration for the title of this blog — I love the idea of travelers, nomads, and wayfarers. But for any nerd, it will also feel a little bit like home.
The Way Station is at 683 Washington Avenue in Prospect Park. You can take the A to Washington or 2/3 to BK Museum or Q to 7th Ave.
